The 71st AIESEC International Congress is currently being held in Hyderabad, India, from 6th to 13th July 2019. The Congress has gathered 400+ young leaders from as many as a hundred countries. In addition to the youthful energy brought in by the presence of these young leaders who are local and national officers of AIESEC entities, the Congress has also gathered experienced minds leading sectors ranging from business to social causes.
Eight notable global partners of AIESEC were invited to International Congress 2019 on the second day of the conference to engage and inspire young leaders into taking action towards the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Asian Development Bank (ADB), Plan International, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Amplifon, Internet Society, The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Electrolux Food Foundation and Junior Chamber International (JCI) were committed a complete one day dedicated to their interaction with the delegates of the conference.
A platform as big as International Congress has a lot of benefits attached to it, and one of the key characteristics of this platform is the extent of diversity involved with respect to the number of countries present, and the opportunity this offers to impact the minds of the youth from all over the world.
Understanding this core value of the platform that is International Congress, it was only ideal that the youth get an opportunity to gain wisdom from the experienced. And the experienced get the same chance to share their knowledge and learning to help the youth better that which is yet to come.
Leaders For 2030 was a day to celebrate the partnerships that add value and help AIESEC build leaders with sustainable actions; leaders who are focused than ever before, on achieving the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, and advocating for the same.
The day began with the launch of the YouthSpeak Survey 2019. The youth population is the largest in the world right now, it is important that they are given an opportunity to be heard. Young people need to be involved in the decision-making process of the actions that have the potential to shape the world. The YouthSpeak Survey will collect the opinions of thousands of young people from across the globe, and generate a clear understanding of what the youth of today stands for.
This was followed by a remarkable event, the World’s Largest Lesson delivered in partnership with Electrolux Food Foundation and Worldchefs – Association of Chefs. The Lesson saw a participation of 3000+ students across three local schools of Hyderabad, India.
400+ delegates of International Congress traveled to the three schools to teach students about the Sustainable Development Goal #12: Responsible Production and Consumption. In one hour of time, several activation spaces and information seminars were held in the three schools, empowering the students to adopt sustainable food practices and inspiring them to pledge to become #FoodHeroes.
Later on in the day, several keynotes and workshops were conducted by AIESEC’s Partners on different aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals. These workshops helped in the capacity building of the delegates and offered a strong networking space between partners and delegates.
A Youth4GlobalGoals Media Zone was set up for virtual delegates and attendees. Partners were asked questions about their contribution to the SDGs and were encouraged to share their thoughts on youth leadership for sustainability.
“If we don’t change our habits, how we eat how we cook, how we treat our food.…the sustainable goals will not be possible to achieve. While the good news also is that everyone can do something about it. By making those little choices, every day can make a big difference.”, said Ekaterina Trofimova, Program Coordinator-Social Investment, Electrolux.
Leaders for 2030 was an eventful day. A day that merged inspiration and action, and created a strong relationship between the young and the experienced. Today, the world needs leaders more than ever. And it is events and partnerships like this that ensure that the youth feel confident and trusted with the responsibility of being successful leaders of today and tomorrow.
